Clarington Zone Sponsors Boys' Literacy Event
Submitted By Nicole Schoonderbeek on Friday, February 22, 2019
UPDATE: This event has reached the maximum number of participants. A wait list is available; we will let you know if a spot becomes available.

The Clarington Zone is proud to sponsor the 'Sticks & Stories' event, which is being held on Saturday, March 23 from 10:00-12:00 at South Courtice Arena.

Ethan Schoonderbeek, a player on our minor midget team, was awarded a Rising Youth community service grant from the federal government for this event. Ethan wants to address the increasing gap of literacy and communication skills for boys and has recruited his teammates and friends from the minor midget team to assist. This event will extend the influence of our big, teenage hockey players on the kids who look up to them, and encourage the little kids to read. The AAA players will alternate between playing mini-sticks, reading stories, and sharing snacks with boys between 5-7 years old. The big players will reinforce the message that good hockey players like to read.

This event is completely free of charge, and each participant will receive a gift. Additionally, a librarian from the Clarington Public Library will be on-site with a mobile library table to create custom reading lists for the kids to take home. Sticks & Stories is limited to 30 participants.

We are proud to sponsor our players in this worthwhile endeavour, and thank the other generous sponsors involved: TakingITGlobal, Government of Canada, the Municipality of Clarington, and the Clarington Public Library.
